LADWP’s 3rd Annual Women’s Career & Wellness Expo Builds Careers and Community

by Pamela Workman

The gray skies and looming rain clouds didn’t stand a chance against the energy and excitement at LADWP’s third annual Women’s Career and Wellness Expo, held on Saturday, May 3. Despite the chill in the air, the atmosphere was warm and joyful— filled with purpose and possibilities. In partnership with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 18, more than 2,500 attendees gathered in full force at the LADWP Truesdale Training Center. LADWP staff, students, families, and members of the local community learned about LADWP jobs and benefits and enjoyed family-friendly activities. The event aimed to promote career opportunities in the utility industry, especially for women, and the many employee initiatives and programs that help support work-life balance for women in the workplace. From the moment attendees arrived, that mission came to life through meaningful conversations, interactive experiences, and real-world inspiration.

At the 45 career booths, guests interacted with staff across LADWP’s workforce. They generously shared stories of their work, growth, and information about the hiring process. Careers represented ranged from professional fields like information technology and customer service, to skilled craft positions that are less traditional for women, like Electric Station Operator, Steam Plant Assistant, and Electrical Mechanic. Their insights sparked inspiration for the next generation of leaders, particularly young girls who may have never envisioned themselves in those roles before.

“Today’s Expo is more than a career fair — it’s a celebration of what’s possible when we invest in women and open doors to careers that power our city. I’m proud to see this event hosted right here in Sun Valley, where our community can see firsthand the career paths and leadership opportunities that exist at LADWP. Thank you to LADWP and IBEW Local 18 for your commitment to equity and for creating a space where women and girls are supported to pursue careers where they can lead, build, and shape the future of Los Angeles.”
Councilmember Imelda Padilla, City Council District 6

Throughout the day, the event buzzed with activity. Kids attending with their parents joined in the fun with multiple children’s activities hosted by City of Los Angeles Youth Development, Discovery Zone, DIY Girls and Wildwoods, and everyone enjoyed a dance party with the event’s DJs. Meanwhile, in the LADWP Fiber Optic booth, more than a handful of kids eagerly crafted solar-powered “bugs” with guidance from LADWP engineers. Their laughter echoed through the air as the “bugs” rattled in their hands, as they learned firsthand how creativity and STEM can power the future.

“I am so happy to be here today to see our talented team from across every part of our organization educating community members about the amazing career opportunities LADWP offers. This event showcases everything that comes with a career at LADWP, including fulfilling work and excellent employee benefits. It also raises awareness about our many opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and skilled craft careers for women. As a woman in STEM, I understand the unique challenges we face and the importance of having female representation in these career fields.”
Janisse Quiñones, LADWP Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer

LADWP’s Truesdale Training Center, served as the perfect location to host the many live demonstrations and hands-on activities at the Expo. Attendees also had the chance to get an up-close look at heavy equipment, machinery and even a helicopter, all of which support LADWP’s essential operations, offering a deeper appreciation for the skilled work that keeps our city running. The High Voltage Safety Demo was among the most popular attractions of the day, drawing a large crowd to the booth. Attendees watched a live visual demonstration while learning important information about the dangers of electricity and how to stay safe in potentially hazardous situations. Topics covered included what to do if you encounter a downed power line, how to stay safe if an energized line falls on your vehicle, and important guidelines for safety trimming trees or branches near power lines. The presentation emphasized real-world scenarios and practical steps to help prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

“IBEW Local 18 is proud to partner once again with LADWP for another successful Women’s Expo. This event underscores the significant contributions of women to our organization and the utility. I believe it offers an invaluable opportunity to inspire future generations and demonstrate the diverse career possibilities available to women. Today, we’re here to encourage women to explore career pathways offered by LADWP and consider joining the ranks of skilled employees where they can make a real impact.”
Gus Corona, IBEW Local 18 Business Manager

In the wellness area, Expo-goers learned about the benefits that come with working with LADWP, including health plans, employee assistance programs, and professional resource groups. Wellness representatives also reminded attendees that a fulfilling career is more than the job—it’s about health, balance, and support.

As the event ended, what remained was a renewed commitment to lifting each other up, creating space for women to thrive, and inspiring the next generation to dream bigger. Events like the LADWP Women’s Career and Wellness Expo remind us that when communities come together, real change happens. Rain or shine, the future is bright.
