LADWP Welcomes New CEO and Chief Engineer Janisse Quiñones
On May 14, the Los Angeles City Council confirmed Janisse Quiñones as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Engineer of LADWP. Quiñones took her oath and officially began her tenure as the leader of the nation’s largest municipal utility following the retirement of former General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams. Quiñones brings over 25 years of leadership experience as a senior executive in utility and engineering industries, where she focused on accomplishing many initiatives similar to LADWP’s.

Commissioners Approve Biodiversity, Equitable Nature-Based Solutions for LADWP Operations
The Board of Commissioners recently approved a motion to integrate biodiversity initiatives and nature-based solutions throughout the Department’s operations. The action calls for evaluating LADWP properties within underserved communities that can be transformed into native plant gardens or restoration areas to increase access to nature. This resolve aims to protect natural lands within LADWP’s jurisdiction to help enhance equity and access to nature for all Angelenos and reaffirm LADWP’s dedication to biodiversity preservation and equitable environmental stewardship.

North Hollywood High School Takes Second Place at National Science Bowl
North Hollywood High School achieved a remarkable second-place finish at the National Science Bowl Competition in Washington, D.C. The team represented Los Angeles and competed among 67 other high school teams from across the country. Organized by the U.S. Department of Energy, this prestigious event showcased the students' outstanding scientific knowledge and teamwork skills. The team’s success reflects their dedication to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and their rigorous preparation. Despite a determined effort by North Hollywood, Lexington High School from Massachusetts emerged in first place, with University High School from Irvine, California securing third place. LADWP congratulates North Hollywood High School on their significant achievement. We are proud to support their excellence in STEM, as we promote youth education in fields that may lead to careers in the utility and in the sciences.
LADWP's Groundwater Treatment Program Wins Water Project of the Year
Los Angeles' $480 million investment in groundwater treatment to maximize local water supplies won the Water Project of the Year from the Global Water Awards. Former General Manager and Chief Engineer Martin L. Adams and Anselmo Collins, Senior Assistant General Manager - Water System, accepted the award on behalf of the Department, in April at a ceremony in London. LADWP's Groundwater Treatment Program aims to recover 75 million gallons per day of contaminated water from the San Fernando Valley Groundwater Basin to bolster L.A.’s water supplies. It involves constructing treatment facilities in North Hollywood and Tujunga, utilizing advanced processes like activated carbon and UV oxidation to address various contaminants. By enhancing local water sources, the project reduces our reliance on imported water in light of California's frequent droughts.

LADWP and USGBC Team Up to BuildSmart
LADWP and the U.S. Green Building Council California (USGBC-CA) have teamed up for an educational roadshow designed to bring innovations in energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable materials directly to our customers. The tour showcases the BuildSMART Trailer, which provides a mobile and hands-on experience for neighborhood residents where they can learn and engage with technology, sustainable building materials, and energy-saving programs to promote the sustainable home of the future. The tour also provides accessibility to resources in Los Angeles communities disproportionately impacted by climate change. The trailer features information on induction cooktops, heat-reflective paint, smart home systems, insulation techniques, low-flow water hardware, EV charging systems, and more.
