Watershed Resources Specialist
Watershed Resources Specialists use their biological, ecological, and agricultural knowledge to serve as stewards of land and water resources under the care of City of Los Angeles. Employees in this classification perform environmental analyses, research and surveys on soils, vegetation, fish and wildlife to better manage these natural resources within the Owens Valley, Mojave Desert and Mono Basin watersheds. Watershed Resources Specialists work on a broad array of environmental issues related to maintaining and protecting the city’s municipal water supply from the Los Angeles Aqueduct. This work entails biological monitoring and analysis, environmental restoration, habitat care and other aspects of natural resource management, while working with other government agencies, tribal groups, and stakeholders. The application period for the Watershed Resources Specialist classification will open in April 2025. Helping the Next Generation of Engineers Design Their Future
LADWP recently partnered with the American Society of Civil Engineers Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (ASCE LA YMF), whose Board currently includes nine LADWP staff members, on a variety of events to engage with students in Los Angeles and showcase what a career in engineering can hold.
ASCE LA YMF Student Night and Job Fair
On January 31, about 200 students from 11 local universities headed to the California Science Center for ASCE LA YMF’s Student Night and Job Fair. LADWP served as a title sponsor for the event, where engineering students had the opportunity to network, explore employment opportunities and receive scholarship awards. Serge Haddad, Assistant Director of LADWP’s Water Quality Division, served as the event’s keynote speaker, where he took the opportunity to speak on the importance of mentorship, guidance and networking to help bolster learning and career growth.
"As supervisors, managers, and leaders, we have an obligation to mentor and guide the next generation of engineers. We benefited from the mentorship of our predecessors and now it’s our turn to give back. I believe the best way to mentor someone is for both the mentee and mentor to be in the same room. I encourage all in the early stages of their careers to increase their opportunity for mentorship by maximizing their in-person presence in the office and in the field.”
Serge Haddad, Assistant Director, Water Quality Division
Engineers Week
In February, LADWP engineers continued to inspire local students through participation in ASCE LA YMF’s 12th Annual Engineers Week. Events were held from February 18-22, and LADWP served as a Champion sponsor for the week, which was filled with engaging programming for over 500 local students. The theme this year was “Design Your Future” and events included Elementary School Day, Middle School Day, Girl Day, High School Day and Girl Scouts Day. Students had the chance to participate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities, listen to current engineers and participate in essay contests for scholarships of $1,800.
"Engineers Week is my favorite week of the year, and the best part of it is introducing students to STEM and inspiring the next generation of engineers across Los Angeles! It’s important for LADWP to give back to the community in this way to connect with, support, and uplift our residents and future generations.”
Ani Sarkissian, Civil Engineering Associate, Water Engineering & Technical Services Division and ASCE LA YMF Board President
Middle School Day was held at LADWP’s La Kretz Innovation Campus once again this year, where Chloe Gharios, Civil Engineering Associate in the Power Engineering Division, shared her knowledge with students and led the day’s events, which included multiple hands-on STEM activities. She was joined by two other amazing speakers, Javier Noriega, Power Engineering Manager in the Power Engineering Division, and Katelyn Gunderson, a Flight Test Engineer. Both discussed the paths they took to reach their dream jobs.
LADWP thanks the employees who took time to provide educational outreach and community engagement to help guide young students towards designing a better future for themselves. Engineering/STEM fields are integral to the work of the Department and community outreach is an important factor for a knowledgeable and skilled future workforce.
