The Town Hall Employee Meeting on May 15 featured presentations about important Department-wide topics, highlighting support for employees and the navigation of recent federal actions at the Department level. Before the presentations, Chief Administrative Officer John Smith kicked off the meeting with exciting updates on this year’s Women’s Career and Wellness Expo, Lineman’s Rodeo and upcoming Workday launch.
Presentations then began with Ashley Rawls, Utility Services Specialist in the Customer Service Division and Employees Association President, who gave an inside look into the important work of the Employees Association in support of LADWP employees, notably during the aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year. During the second presentation, Paul Habib, Director of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, shared an overview of key federal actions and how his team is actively monitoring these actions for potential impacts to the Department.
Following the presentations, the presenters joined Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer Kendall Helm for a Q&A session to answer questions from audience members about the meeting’s topics. Information from the meeting is available to employees on MyDWP. Next month’s meeting is slated for July 16, the third Wednesday of the month, and will be held in Bishop, CA.

LADWP’s Teams Win Big at 33rd Annual Lineman’s Rodeo

There are certain distinctive sounds associated with the LADWP Lineman’s Rodeo. It can be the thud of metal climbing spikes impacting wood or the jingle, jangle of tool belts and equipment punctuated by thunderous rock music, but among the most common sounds is ebullient cheering as LADWP teams walk on stage to accept winning trophies. This was certainly the case at the 33rd annual LADWP Lineman’s Rodeo held on Saturday, May 17 at the Truesdale Training Center in Sun Valley. Six LADWP teams placed in the top 10 in the various competition events.
Sponsored by LADWP and IBEW Local 18, this important skills competition featured Journeyman level and Apprentice line workers participating in various events. The Rodeo included teams from LADWP as well as competitors from Southern California area utilities and other parts of the Western United States.
“This family-friendly event provided an opportunity for the public to better understand and recognize the skills that line workers use in the course of doing their jobs. It also provides an opportunity for these professionals to receive recognition in their trades, which are critical to keeping the lights on and restoring power to Los Angeles, especially during emergencies.”
Nazir Fazli, Electrical Services Manager, Power System Safety and Training
Teams and individual competitors took on challenging events such as Apprentice Quiz, Insulator Change, Obstacle Course, Hurtman Rescue, Crossarm Change, Jumper Change and Pole Climb. Each event presents varying degrees of technical difficulty and complexity as participants assembled and connected electrical infrastructure atop power poles.
LADWP took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Apprentice overall category and first place in three of the five Apprentice events. Tyler Scurria, Electric Distribution Mechanic Trainee (EDMT), took first place in the Apprentice Obstacle Course. Brian Gobeli, EDMT, took first place in the Apprentice Insulator Change. The standout for LADWP Apprentices this year was Evan Pierre, EDMT, who achieved first place in the Quiz competition and the Overall category.
In the Journeyman category, LADWP teams took first and second place in the 4.8KV Crossarm Change. The first-place team was comprised of Dustin Rose, Tom Crevier, and Jorge Jimenez. The second-place team was comprised of Jonathan Garren, Michael Kolb, and Jeffrey Halstead.
First place in the Journeyman Pole Climb event was won by the LADWP team of Salvador Flores, Jesus Lopez, and Brian Lomeli. This same team also took first place in the Journeyman 4.8KV Open Jumper event and second place in the Journeyman Hurtman Rescue event.
LADWP took 2nd and 3rd place in the Overall Journeyman category thanks to great performances by the 2nd place team of Christopher Hitt, Kyle Morgan and Michael Beach, and the 3rd place team of Dustin Rose, Tom Crevier and Jorge Jimenez.
The top finishers will go on to compete in the International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas, which will be held October 15-18, 2025.
LADWP Celebrates AANHPI Heritage Month with a Vibrant Opening Ceremony
LADWP marked the start Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in May by hosting a spirited opening ceremony at the LADWP cafeteria dining hall. Led by the ASPIRE employee resource group (ERG), the event honored AANHPI communities and their enduring legacy of leadership, innovation, and resilience.
Event hosts and ASPIRE members Serena Beltran and Ingrid Spielbauer opened the program by reflecting on the challenges AANHPI communities have faced, and the strength they’ve shown in rising above them. The program spotlighted powerful stories of perseverance, including the legacy of Peter Soohoo Sr., the first Chinese American engineer at LADWP. He was instrumental in advancing the city’s power systems and helped establish New Chinatown during a time of widespread racial exclusion.
Through performance, storytelling and community, the event captured the richness of AANHPI heritage. Guests were welcomed by talented student musicians who performed traditional Thai music with the ranad tum and khim instruments, setting a joyful tone for the day. Other special performances and speakers included:
- A graceful Thai “Fon Mahori Isan,” a traditional northeastern Thai dance from the region called Isan, performed by the Wat Pratat Doi Suthep USA. It is often used for welcoming ceremonies and cultural shows. The dance emphasizes smooth, flowing movements that harmonize with the music, reflecting both the sweetness of the mahori sound and the lively spirit of the Isan region.
- An inspiring Herstory Talk from Priscilla Gonzalez, Manager of Trunk Line Design, who shared her journey of identity and leadership.
- A joyful hula dance to the song, “He U’i,” performed by ASPIRE member Kalei Munoz, celebrating Hawaiian culture. Hula is an ancient Hawaiian art form that tells stories through song and dance. It reflects the history of the Hawaiian people and their land, creates a connection to their ancestors, and helps preserve their oral traditions and cultural heritage.
Each performer and speaker were honored with a traditional lei, a symbol of appreciation and respect.

Beyond the stage, the celebration extended into the event space with a photography station, a raffle giveaway and a delicious cornucopia of food offerings from across AANHPI cultures. The event was made possible by the dedicated efforts of ASPIRE, support from LADWP staff and leadership across the Department, and the generous sponsorship of the Water and Power Community Credit Union.
LADWP Employees Observe Memorial Day
LADWP employees took part in Memorial Day events to honor those who’ve fallen in service to our nation and those that continue to serve. Members of LADWP’s employee resource group (ERG) VALOR (Veterans Alliance for Leadership Outreach & Recognition), volunteered at the annual commemoration ceremony at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills. The event included dignitaries from the Los Angeles Police Department and branches of the U.S. Armed Force. For many of the employee veterans it was a very moving experience to visit the graves of fallen service members interred in the cemetery. They helped plant small U.S. flags at military gravesites, read the names out loud and rendered a salute followed by a moment of silence.
“VALOR observed Memorial Day in the true spirit of the holiday by personally honoring the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our country,” said Kerry McCorkle, LADWP Legislative & Intergovernmental Affairs Office and VALOR executive board member. “We thank Forest Lawn for the opportunity to help keep the memory of these men and women alive.”
Employees also participated in the annual L.A. Fleet Week® - a multi-day celebration of our nation’s sea services held on the L.A. Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles. LADWP's Recruitment Services Section (RSS) and another contingent of VALOR members engaged with attendees seeking employment. Outreach also included current members of the military who may be transitioning out of the service to civilian life. They provided information on LADWP career fields that match military occupations, the hiring process and veteran supportive benefits.

“RSS is proud to be part of Fleet Week® because veterans bring valuable skills and a strong work ethic that aligns perfectly with LADWP’s mission and culture,” said Jennifer Shar, Recruitment Manager. “We are always looking for dedicated individuals who are driven to make a real impact. We look forward to them joining the LADWP family and helping us keep L.A. running with reliable water and power.”
Events at L.A. Fleet Week® included active-duty ship tours, military equipment displays and demonstrations, food, live entertainment and career booths from various government and city agencies.
